Back pain is one of the most common medical problems affecting 8 out of 10 people at some point in their lives. But no matter when it appears or what may have caused it, back pain is well …… a pain!

There are several things that you can do to help ease and relieve back pain and keep your back in good condition.

SLEEP

Sleep is easily disturbed when suffering from pain, but not getting enough sleep may actually worsen the inflammation and pain within your muscles and joints.

Make sure you invest in a good quality mattress and experiment with different sleeping positions to find what is most comfortable for you. An extra pillow added under your body or between your knees can also help ease the pain when sleeping on your side. Getting a decent amount of sleep every night will help your body repair itself.

World Sleep Day on the 15th March created and hosted by the World Sleep Society is an internationally recognised awareness event bringing researchers, health professionals and patients together to recognise sleep and the huge importance it has on our health and well-being.

 

ICE AND HEAT

Applying regular applications of ice/ cold compresses to the painful area of your back may help reduce pain and inflammation. Try this several times a day for 15-20 minutes each time – make sure you wrap the ice pack in a thin towel to protect your skin.

Applying a heat pack can also help relax your muscles and increase blood flow to the affected areas. You can also try warm baths and use muscle bath salts to help ease the pain.

GENTLE EXERCISE

A lot of people tend to think when suffering from back pain the right thing to do is rest and do nothing, however too much rest can actually worsen certain types of back pain and decrease muscle strength.

Stretching the muscles may help reduce the pain within the back, gentle exercise such as stretches and slow easy walks will help heal the muscles and create blood flow around the area.
