Fibromyalgia – Finding a natural alternative
For many of us, Fibromyalgia wasn’t a word we heard of until more recently or until we, ourselves were diagnosed with it. A condition that although has been around a long time doctors continue to not be able to pinpoint exactly what the causes are and combined that these causes were all linked around the same thing as not one Fibro suffer suffers from the same aliments. The word myalgia means ‘pain within the muscles’. Fibromyalgia is not, however, an inflammatory disorder and the exact cause of Fibromyalgia is unknown, but it is understood to be related to abnormal levels of certain chemicals in the brain and changes in the way in which the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) process pain messages that are carried around the body.
For those people suffering from Fibromyalgia, it can be an isolating experience, but it is important to remember that you are not alone. A complicated and mysterious illness its symptoms can be singular things such as extreme headaches or fatigue or a multitude of things such as widespread muscle pain, irritable bowel, muscle stiffness and difficulty sleeping.
Everyone suffering from Fibromyalgia has their own journey and everyone suffers from different levels of pain. Diagnoses of Fibromyalgia is a long and daunting process resulting in many cases of several years of tests and various treatments to alienate any other possible conditions. It is said that in many cases the condition is triggered by a physically or emotionally stressful event in a person life but also this is not the case for some sufferers. Anyone can develop fibromyalgia, although it affects around seven times as many women as men between the ages of 30 – 50 years old. It can also affect children and the elderly.
So what can we do to help ourselves if we suffer from Fibromyalgia?
Although there is currently no cure for Fibromyalgia, there are treatments to help ease and relieve some of the symptoms which make the condition easier to live with.
Treatments tend to be a combination of medication (antidepressants, painkillers, and anti-inflammatories), therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy and counselling and lifestyles changes such as exercise and relaxation techniques.
For many people though the constant use of prescribed medication is having a huge effect on their body.
Taken from a personal blog of a Fibromyalgia sufferer he describes:
“We are all on medication. From a personal point of view, I have yet to find anything that truly helps. Pain killers can sometimes take the edge off but not for long and not to any real benefit. By the time you find a cocktail of drugs that you end up sticking to you feel like a guinea pig who has been tested on.
Some have said they have felt improvements from drugs, natural remedies and treatments. Diet is also said to play a part. The healthier the better you may feel”
